“You don’t give orders, you share. . .”

JC: A CEO can just make a decision.

FH: Sure.

JC: But in most situations in fact that’s use of power, not leadership. And the question I have for you is what have you learned about how to get the right decisions to happen when you don’t have the concentrated power to make the decisions happen? FH: The power of mission, the power of shared values, the power of language, you don’t give orders, you share and when—what kind of results do you get from a dispirited workforce where, “this is the order of the day, now get it done” or “all right this is the work, it’s our work” and they are involved in the decisions that affect them, and the results, the productivity, soars. . . Peter Drucker says “corporations today will have to learn to lead knowledge workers the way social sector organizations lead volunteers.”
