U.S. ARMY by Mark Goldsmith

“You have to understand, I'd probably be characterized as socially liberal and fiscally conservative, but I never really understood the Army before I met Frances and before I came to West Point with her. . . The vision that one has of West Point is, you know, warmongering, and these kind of guys, and then you meet the average cadet, and you meet just an extremely, highly intelligent, open-minded young men, and now women who we've met, I think, I probably—my whole perception of the army has changed. . .

I think just an example, we met with General Casey, the chief of staff and I said to him I would be willing to try to help in any way to get ROTC back onto the Ivy League campuses. We think back to the Vietnam War and all the problems it had, the diversity of opinion. I was actually part of a group called 'Businessmen Against the War' because this wasn't even a good war for business—it was just so awful.

But, when you go there now and you meet these young men and women, and you recognize the fact—why wouldn't you want to have the best and the brightest heading up your army? Your defenses? I mean, I don't get it! I mean, they're volunteering their services and hopefully that can be fixed before too long, that we can now have ROTC back in any university who would invite it.”
