Philip Knight, the founder and chairman of Nike, reflected on this: ‘A plan is more than a list of where we are going to be: Point A, Point B, Point C. The problem is that the plan never works out in the way you thought it would. When we look ahead over the next three or four years and say, ‘Here’s a plan with a capital P’—and we’ve done this a little bit—the guys in the middle read it and think it is cast in stone.
