The Csiksentmihalyi Flow Test

Set a reminder on your phone or tablet to go off 40 random times in a week. Each time your device alarms, record what you are doing, how you’re feeling, and whether you are ”in flow.” At the end of the week, look at the pattern and consider the following:

1. What moments produce feelings of “flow”? Where were you? What were you working on? Who were you with?

2. Are certain times of day more flow-friendly than others? How could you restructure your day to maximize those times?

3. How might you increase the number of optimal experiences and reduce the moments when you felt disengaged?

4. If you’re having doubts about your job or career, what does this exercise tell you about your true source of intrinsic motivation?
