“[Amar Bhide] interviewed company founders from the 1989 Inc. 500 list of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the United States, selecting only those enterprises founded in the previous eight years. In total, he conducted 100 interviews, providing one of the few empirical studies on the key success factors for the early phases of a startup. From his survey, only 4 percent of his interviewees said that they had conducted methodical research to explore new business opportunities. The majority of them (71 percent) had relied on their past work experience to find something that they could adopt.”
