AL GORE by ThEME

Warren Bennis: I think Al Gore, and I have talked with him about this, was a hostage of his parent’s dreams. So he put himself—see, I don’t think he ever wanted to be President enough. What a crummy campaign he ran in 2000 against George W. This is the guy when you are with him, he is funny, he is easy, and there he was screwing up, when he’s a candidate. The only good speech he gave was when he conceded.

But when he became what he won the Nobel Prize for, he was something—when he talks about conservation, when he talks about deforestation, he is amazing. So how do you know? I mean, a thing that’s so interesting that (John) Gardner still said though, ‘I guess there were some qualities there; that life was waiting to pull out of me.’ You and I have been very lucky, Al has been lucky too. I mean, he has ended up where he wants to be.
