“What Makes a great leader?”

“What makes a great leader?

I think there are two big things and they are the hardest things in the world to teach.

- The first thing is the capacity to build a team that is compatible and that has created in that top team transparency and a culture of candor where people feel close, cooperative, and they know their fates are correlated. And they are doing things together. And building that team is like building a great jazz quintet or a great symphony orchestra. Great leaders build great teams. You can’t win this contest without a lot of help and a lot of people who are joint in their efforts and understand deeply and are aligned.

- The second thing is Judgment—It is not just picking the right people—not the right resumes—It is a different capacity to pick really people who have resumes and can play together in the sandbox. It is a different capacity to pick future nobel laureates that can’t play together—that’s not a great team.”
