THE SUCCESS OF ILLINOIS’S WELFARE PROGRAM by E. H. EDERSHEIM

“In 2003, President Bush came to UPS on the south side of Chicago to celebrate the success of people who had moved off welfare. On the stage with Mayor Daley; Mike Eskew, the CEO of UPS; and President Bush was Vivian Kimmons. As the fourth speaker, she related her story—on welfare for nine years, mother of nine children, and now a three-year employee, manager, and stockholder of UPS. There were tears in many people’s eyes.”
