DOUGLAS MCGREGOR by Warren Bennis

“The term mentor doesn’t do justice to what a great one does. I’ve written about mentoring before—about the reciprocal nature of the relationship, for example—but I don’t think I’ve adequately acknowledged the generosity a mentor shows. A mentor does so much more than share his or her wisdom with the mentored. The mentor allows the protégé to share in his or her achievement, an extraordinary gift. Moreover, the mentor puts his or her reputation on the line with every good word dropped about the mentored to people in power, every recommendation made. In that sense, mentoring is an act of faith.”
