STARTING AN AVALANCHE by Chester I. Barnard

Usually unsought effects are regarded as incidental and trivial. For example, a man running to catch an animal for food gives off heat energy to the atmosphere, pulverizes a small amount of gravel, tears off a bit of skin, and somewhat increases his need of food while attempting to secure it. At other times consequences not sought for are not regarded as trivial. For example, the man running may move a stone which starts an avalanche which destroys his family, or his dwelling, or his stock of stored food.
