“Leaders attempt to avoid, or at least reduce, conflict by. . .”

“Leaders attempt to avoid, or at least reduce, conflict by negotiating compromises. The alternatives—rancor, hostility, and, quite often, decisions by fiat—lead nowhere. Conflict only creates winners and losers who lock horns on other issues. And it drains time, thought, and emotion better devoted to running the business. Faced with potential conflict a leader must consider questions like these: Which of the compromises available in this situation will help others meet their personal or subunit needs in ways that motivate the organization closer to my long-term goals?

Which alternative is most likely to reduce conflict and defuse opposition to my objectives?

How can I save face for those who might lose in this situation?

If compromise is likely, what will I be willing to give up and what might I have to give up?”
