“If you can keep the humour, it’s all right.”

‘I don’t have that many problems,’ . . . ‘Not day-to-day ones, because I have people to look after me . . . I’m very lucky, I don’t have to pack my bags, I don’t have to worry about my aeroplane, I don’t have to worry about my cars. But then you have a lot of people who have emotional problems, and I don’t.’ Even so, ‘when you’re on a big tour, and people expect a lot from you, there’s pressure . . . You have to learn to relax . . . You have to be calm and effective and [ensure] all your judgements are balanced, because after a while the pressure gets so much that a lot of bands just freak out on the road. Which has always been a thing of humour for us . . . if you can keep the humour, it’s all right.’
