We all have a set of values that govern our lives. When they’re present, they make us feel engaged and alive. These might be things like adventure, creativity, or accomplishment. Unfortunately, we often lose sight of these and life takes over.
Because values are leading indicators of passion, it is important to take time to identify and reconnect them.
One of the best ways to reconnect with your values is through stories about times when you felt really alive. These experiences carry the DNA of what you value most. They can be personal, work-related, school-related, or whatever else, as long as they describe times when you felt really happy.
The exercise:
1. Begin by finishing this statement:
a. A time in my life that I felt really alive was ___________________. (Try to answer this 3 – 5 times)
b. For each give some detail
i. What were you doing?
ii. Who were you with?
iii. What did you achieve or learn?
2. Look at your answers and identify values you think were present.
Below is a list of values to spark your thinking. Circle your top 5-10 and feel free to add any others. When finished, prioritize them. This will help you get clear as to what is most important to you.
