“I think Johnstown, Pennsylvania typifies small-town growing up, particularly back in the 30s, 40s, 50s. I can't speak for it now because obviously I haven't been there, except for reunions, but there was something about the nature of the work that people did: earning a living, everybody working, the thought that you got a certain responsibility to take care of business, to take care of each other. There was a camaraderie and I wonder if that can really exist in a very large community.”
