“[Leading the Girl Scouts] was a very challenging managerial job because the councils are independent. She worked for them, rather than vice-versa. She didn't determine what the councils did—the councils voted for her leadership—very decentralized organization. So she didn't have the power of a normal CEO that says, ‘You—you know, you shape up or you're leaving.’ She couldn't do anything like that, nor did she want to. So the program that she came to discuss with me was a managerial program that would help give the council leaders the skills they needed in order to help these councils to flourish and also, an additional goal, to give them the kind of boost in self-confidence that the professors who were normally teaching executives from big Fortune 500 companies were teaching them.”
